Heiliggeistkirche

Hundreds of thousands of people pass by the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit) every day. It is an island in the sea of traffic and bustle: an Open City Church that is open to all, regardless of religion, origin or social status; and it sees itself as a place of encounter. In Bern's everyday life, it has established itself as an institution that stands up for the weak and marginalised in our society. For the homeless, for example. They can find a place to sit on the steps to the church. In the church, if they wish, they can also get a sympathetic ear for their concerns or a free coffee in the cafeteria.

The Open City Church of Bern is also committed to refugees and asylum seekers. For example, on the annual Refugee Day. It raises awareness for issues of justice and human rights.

Preserving creation. This is how the Church of the Holy Spirit understands its basic mission. Careful treatment of the environment and resources is a natural part of this. Every autumn, a Food Save Banquet takes place in front of the church. Only food that has been "saved" is served. Vegetables that are too crooked, too small, too big and have been sorted out so that they do not end up in the retail trade.

By the way, the parishes in Bern are certified with the "Grüner Güggel", the green cock. This church initiative wants to support parishes and churches to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and thus contribute to climate protection.
