Rathaus Bern

The first thing you notice about the façade of Bern City Hall is the large staircase on the front. But don't worry, the main entrance is on the ground floor. The town hall is thus barrier-free accessible, as required by law.

For over 600 years, the town hall has been the political centre of the canton and city of Bern. The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Old Town of Bern. Five times a year, the Great Council, the cantonal parliament, meets for its session. The City Council, the Bern City Parliament, also meets here, as does the Youth Parliament of the Canton and City of Bern.

With 69 per cent women, the Bern City Parliament is the most female in Switzerland. This figure is also one of the highest internationally. Diversity and gender equality as well as equality for people with disabilities are important issues in the city of Bern. Important information is accessible in several languages and in easy to read.
